Dance Studio - Night Club

Or is it Night Club - Dance Studio?
They exist on the Mainland but no one has ever seen one in Hawaii. The Combinations just exists very comfortable with each other. In Honolulu, the closest you come to this is at Dream To Dance studio with their Salsa dances on Saturday and Sunday. If it were a little larger it would be the perfect set up for a dance bar.

My 13 year old great grandson Jacob likes to tell people that "My great grandfather is so old that when he was in school history was called current events."

There will probably be one in West Oahu before anywhere else, maybe Ewa or Kapolei. New ideas are coming to the forefront in the West. Regular bars in the West can be a rather rough business but coupled with a studio teaching social dance, the clientele is much smoother and probably over 30.

Waikele or Waipio are also natural locations for the new Dance Studio, Night Club combo. And it would very probably have a Juice Bar. Soda pop and other cans that can be sold in machines to cut down the labor costs would be set up. They may even be the first with a Pau Hana dance midweek, every week. Everyone has an idea somewhere. We are just waiting for something to click.

Meanwhile, Oahu -West has been astonishing in racking up the hits. I was hoping for over the 34 per day barrier but it is now comfortably in the upper 40s and well ahead of Central Valley and Moanalua Corridor. This is just amazing and coupled with whatever new places arise, it will be a humdinger of a blog.

Of course, many are still thinking in terms of having the people from town attending their functions in the West. This is "Downtown Thinking" as it has been for years. Now we are getting the new thinkers. Kapolei Night Club for the 100 thousand dancers that live and work in the West. The ones in town can contiunue to enjoy their usual venues. And we have some very good musicians in Waianae. It is all coming out ever so slowly.

Pub's Side Note: Nice new dancer from town I just met. Has a nice business and he says he doesn’t want any yes men. He wants everyone to tell him the truth, even if it costs them their jobs!

There is a third group of New York dancers, I grant you that it is a dying breed, but it is still there. It is what I can only call "cultural Two dancers". These are remnants of past explosions in the music’s popularity when peoplesimply learn to dance on the dance floor; in their homes with their friends; watching others; stepping on each others feet; going for it. The last suchexplosion took place in the early 70’s. There was a club called the Cheetah wherethe New York Latin youth were introduced by the thousands to Salsa by the Fania All Stars.

People just got into it and learned to dance, without going to lessons. Many people learned to dance like that, some of them on the "2", someon the "3", and others (fewer) both ways. In any case, in New York, if youreally want to mingle you have to make some adjustments. Somebody has to. It is usually the man who has to adjust to the lady. Or you tell the lady that youreally would like to dance with her, but that you dance different and find itdifficcult, or impossible, to adjust. She will probably give it a try atadjusting to the leading man’s ways.

That is the way it is in New York. Once you dance outside the few places wherethe dance studio crowd hangs out, you are on your own; you enter the real world of social interaction; no more "lets practice the CBL with the triple combo withside kick and double time shuffle". Or the "the double underarm sniff con tresvueltas en un pie" It is "Social Basics Level One".

Was Mambo "the original dance"? Is there anything preceding the Mambo that we can associate Salsa with? Did people in Latin America, or to be more specific, from the Afro/Spanish Caribbean, dance anything similar to Salsa? Man, the list is so long that I really don’t know where to start. There was of course the Son, the Danzon, the Guaracha, the Son Montuno, the ChaChaCha, the Guarapachanga, the Charanga, the Bolero, the Cumbia, there was also an array of 6/8 rhythms and dances such as the Mangulina, the Colombian Merengue, the Joropo. I mention these 6/8 dances because they were executed much the same way as Salsa.

One of the more populargroups throughout the Caribbean Basin was, without questions, La SonoraMatancera. They catered mainly to the musical tastes of the people of the Caribbean Basin. Their menu was incredibly varied, and their lead singers, as well as other musicians, while coming mainly from Cuba, were also from other parts of the Caribbean; as I mentioned before, from Puerto Rico, from the Dominican Republic (Alberto Beltran), from Venezuela (Bienvenido Granda). Theirstyle and even their concept (the name Sonora refers to a musical ensembleplaying Son based music) was emulated by others in the Caribbean. The "taste" for Salsa among Latinos predates the Mambo.

Outlook for March

This blog is still an elementary work in progress since Central Valley is back in the running for their section. The hits were there and we go according to the reader/dancers. No hits and out they go. Plenty hits and they have to stay in.

Of course, Oahu - West is our newest blog and it has a lot of competition so it will just take awhile. The hits although slow in coming, are gradually going up. It is possible that they will get to the viable goal of 34 average hits per day by St. Patrick's Day. If I can get the Line Dancers in Waianae and the new club in Ewa, we have it made.

Tim Cubero has been a big asset for Kapolei Chapter and also for our reader/dancers with his writing contributions. News from Kapolei sends the hits through the roof. Reporter is not an adequate title for him, perhaps Public Relations would be much more accurate. And we also need a public relations officer from Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club that could send us a few write ups and certainly a few photos.

Fortunately, Kapolei has a counter on their Web site so that everyone specially their members, can see how many people read it. Many dancers simply do not know and more than that, they do not want to know. Web sites can be valuable for a Dance Club, they can perform many good functions. Racking up hits is not one of them.

Dance Clubs in Social Media blog sites are a much different item. 5000 or maybe five hits? But you cannot know until you install the counter and Blogger gives it to you free of charge. You cannot beat that. Meanwhile I am trying to get our second best blog to 80 average hits per day. Not there yet? Give us a little time.

The PR position just may be included in the new Dance Clubs in the West. Perhaps it could eventually morph into a Guest Author position and get guaranteed PR. It could have a more positive influence in increasing the membership of the clubs and have the Dance Club more acceptable as an asset to the community by the General Public. So we polish our Dance Blogosphere everyday and it will get better.

Then we happen to have, Richard, the best PR man in the West in the Central Valley blog, who does a better job at PR for the live music scene than any paid person would do. He lives in Haleiwa but he covers a wide area all the way to Waikiki. All benefits for the social recreational dancers that are coming into their own very clearly this year. Potentially, by far, the biggest group of dancers on this Island. He probably should leave one of the downtown blogs and get into the Moanalua Corridor instead. So we go slowly.

Dancing in Makaha

Dancing in Makaha has never been done and as the saying goes, it never will be. Hawaii is such a paradise and it is a shame that a part has to live on tricks. Most of us have heard "around the island" and we know what that means. It does not mean around the island, and there has never been a road around this island of Oahu. Yes, we all know we are kidding ourselves. We do that all the time.

With a road cut to the North Shore, the people in Mokuleia could drive to Mahaha, have a nice dance for an evening and then be home in twenty minutes. The people in Mahaha could drive over to Haleiwa and buy things they couldn't get in Waianae. But we can spend billions and billions of dollars on a rail that everyone knows will not work. We just got suckered into it. Maybe Ben can save us on that.

If they dumped the dirt onto the rocks at Kaena Point the results would be a whole new park created at that point. Sand Island was built on a dream too. There could be enough dirt to build a whole new beach. Kaena Point Beach Park. Ha!

Meanwhile our entire blogosphere feels like the point of diminishing returns but all the indicators point to further expansion. One more good information contributor and one more Guest Author for any of the blogs will do it. Social-Recreational dancing is not Dancing With The Stars.

At the moment we are stable but not increasing. Oahu And Beyond and this blog are the only ones increasing at a good pace. We will weather the storm.

Bongos: Small joined drums of different pitch struck by the fingers of both hands and usually held between the knees. Used in Latin music to augment its distinctive sound. The poor in Latin cities can get a good sound from banging on a cardboard box.

They have been taught on this Island as African but they have actually evolved from the distintive playing of the separate small drums carried by the Indian civilizations of the Americas in festivals for thousands of years.

Getting Confident

The total blog average daily hits go up and down. Lucky for us that when they swing up they usually go higher than before. Then when they swing down, they bottom out higher than before. The net results are that we are getting more hits.

A couple days ago we bottomed out and now with Tim's blogging on HBDA Chapter, the hits are beginning to roll up again solidly. And according to Blogger Stats, we are beginning to get more readership outside of the English speaking countries. The Philippines (in seventh place) are getting close to replace France in sixth place.

It helps that Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club also sends us information. So everyone stays in the limelight and getting to be known throughout the island. Should be plural, Islands. And the more the merrier so if any of you know of a new dance club or organization, let us know and perhaps they can share their information and join us in our blogosphere.

Our blogosphere is getting more trim and efficient. It has become a welcomed relief to eliminate waste of time with those not interested in kokua. We can devote more time to help those that are interested. It is coming up like roses. We do not have to talk stink about anyone, just help those that appreciate it.

Meanwhile we certainly find other benefits in our type of social-cultural dancing. It becomes an excellent hobby in order to lose excess calories and keep excess weight away. Having regular cardio exercise is vital to maintain your circulatory and respiratory system in tip-top shape.

It’s been awhile since we last appeared on the screen! As this new year has already gone more than underway, we hope you have already put on your dancing shoes to get on the dance floor.

What about our dance floor – at Kapolei Elementary School Monday nights 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.!
Our chapter continues with vigor, especially with countless members as new beginners as well as seasoned dancers. We are all so encouraged to find the many, many new faces joining us at the beginning of 2012 which made this new quarter very refreshing – this too with three new dances to learn.

The Agonizing Reappraisal

Now that I know a little more, This is the blog. We have come to that point again and we must adjust, and go on as best we can. I went to Dance Waipahu at August Ahrens School last night and they have clearly communicated that photos are superfluous to their art. It has been happening for almost a year in most of Dance Hawaii classes. They have dancing to do and that is understandable.

I am interested in dancing and the readers are interested in dancing. My only conclusion is to cool it and perhaps next year. So Oahu - West will be the blog and the others will go by the wayside and the reader/dancers have made the decisions. First to go will be Central Valley because the accessibility is very hard for me. Later we can widen the information centers when they are ready.

Our blogs are Social Media. Well, maybe we are not Social Media yet but I can see that we can go nowhere unless we make it Social Media. In our case the most important ingredients are the Information Contributors and the Guest Authors. Different viewpoints? Of course and that's it! The simplicity in the solution is amazing. The difficulty is communicating to those that have the capability of understanding this. Never been done before? I know it.

Central Valley will be phased out slowly and when the hits are below 20, it will be deleted. Meanwhile Oahu -West will take over anything west of Pearl City and we will be looking for more. The promotion of Social Dancing is our primary aim. We will have our hands full with the new clubs forming and hopefully they will be for the dancers.

The Mini Web sites set up in our blogs are slowing being recognized. This will probably take a good six months and then some of our very good contributors will make good use of them for their organizations. Oahu And Beyond is racking up some hits. Looks like downtown still has plenty of dancers or have the Internet more accessible.

Slow but on solid ground

Generally, in the West, the one with the worse technique has more fun. But part of the goal of having good technique is to help your dance partner have more fun. If you want to have fun, you don’t need good technique — just a "partner" with good technique.

"Easy Street is always a dead end or a blind alley."

But if you want your dance partner to have more fun, then "you" need good technique. There are elements of social dance that are purely social, where smiles, friendly conversation, succeeding in moving to the music and doing a few basic steps, etc. override whether your partner is leaning on you, yanking you off balance, crushing your hand, stepping on you, etc. But an amount of technique that enables you to feel good and helps your partner to look good and feel good can only enhance your dance experience.

Some competition technique does look stilted on the social dance floor; (terrible?) we all know that, but a lot of the technique taught by competition coaches are things that make the dance feel more in balance, more fitting to the character of the music, and smoother to both oneself and ones partner.

The problem you face after you learn what good dance technique feels like, is that you become more sensitive to the bad habits of your partners. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, but the better social dancers are adaptive rather than ignorant. Those who can’t or don’t want to learn to adapt can end up paying their professional dance instructors lots of money.

Otherwise, stop being concerned about your partner having fun, and just concentrate on having fun yourself; try Club dancing, or local Dance club places for Social dancing. where people tend to be less anal-retentive about "technique" but nonetheless enjoy dancing together. Fun is primary, because fun is what motivates people to "continue" dancing.

If they happen to enjoy learning tons of technique as beginners, have the money, and they want to move right into competition styles, fine - but I don’t think that’s true of most people. What else is social dancing about, if not getting enjoyment for yourself and pleasing your dance partner? Hey, I wanna dance.

Slow Moving But In The Right Direction

We will do just fine when we get an Information Contributor or a Guest Author. Two mo' bettah. Hopefully we can get someone in the new developing Southwest Shore of Oahu. That's Ewa Beach, Kalealoa and all the way to Barber's Point.

There has been slow building development for the last 20 years especially after the Navy moved out. Ewa Beach has been getting most of the social action with community centers, district parks and a few bars. There have been at least two dance clubs started in that time but they just may have been before their time.

Now may be the time has come and if there is anything doing, let us know, we want to see these pages with dancers and news about dancing. We are not getting enough at the moment. And we need the hits to know that the reader/dancers are interested. And then we can try to do even more.

Central Valley blog is going great guns. Wait till they get Dance Mililani in a couple of months and then too, there may some dance action coming up on the North Shore. The tide cannot be stopped, West Oahu is waking up. And I am working on the Waianae Coast.

Dance Waipahu, August Ahrens School

I have taken special pains to get some information about Dance Waipahu to post into the Oahu - West blog. The reader/dancers are tuning in and it benefits everyone. Oahu - West is now at over 20 average hits per day. The goal by the end of February is 34 average hits per day. That is equal to 1000 hits for a 30 day month. That will make them pretty solid in our blogosphere.

However, I cannot be everywhere at once, and if I cannot be at Dance Waipahu, someone could get some of the information that interests the readers. It is important that it is some one that lives in the territory. This is the Information Contributor that we seek. No monthly meetings or monthly dues. No annual meetings or annual dues. You contribute information only when you damn well please. How is that for being strict?

Definitions, still a terrible word

I agree that we must have definition to know what we are about. Dancing to music is pretty much like walking, except that with dancing you can let the body and the rest of it move according to the way the music, "moves" you. So slow and quick steps do not have to be explained to anyone interested in a cultural dance.

From there you really have only two very very basic movements. Underarm turns are consider intermediate basic but you are definitely getting fancy. The Rock Step and the Chassé are basic, basic. The Rock step has already been covered in the Moanalua Corridor blog of Friday, the 27th. I would like to put in few words for the Chassé.

It also has six different normal basic dance moves. And like everything else in Cultural dance, there are variations, in Brazil perhaps only a hundred or so. But in Brazil most people dance Basic only, divided into basic basic, intermediate basic and advanced basic. Anything more is for the Professionals.

In International there is only one way, the prescribed way, anything else is "incorrect." The Chassé has been formally defined as moving the leading foot followed by stepping with the other foot that stays behind, then stepping forward again with the leading foot. The distinguishing characteristic being that the lead foot stays in the lead.

So the first move in cultural dance: The leader moves his left foot forward and put full weight on it. He brings up his right foot behind the left foot and puts full weight on it. Then he steps forward again with his left foot to complete the chassé. How they move their knees, hips, body, shoulders and head are all up to the dancers and how they feel the music, We are talking music aren't we? The second move is just the opposite starting with the lead's right foot.

In the third and fourth movements, the lead will go back either with his right or his left foot. The rest of the movement follows in order. The fifth and sixth movements are to the sides, right and left and each opposite to each other.

The degrees of direction may be off depending on how the lead interprets the music. The moves can even be curved left or right. He can even lead the lady in a left turn or right turn without even touching her. The ladies are a marvel at following.

Night Club two step? You should try dancing your Samba chassés to the same music, just leave the other basics out.. Beautiful, just perfection. The rhythm is already built in.

If the Dance Teachers had originally taught it "correctly" it could have evolved into a much more popular movement that could be danced to some foxtrots and other slows. Instead it is another classic "ballroom" dance becoming extinct and being replaced in part by Night Club Two Step.

Dancing at August Ahrens School

Beautiful day Saturday in Nanakuli. Everything seemed to moving like clockwork. And I was ready early and left home at 5:17 (odd number for me.) Crossed Farrington Hwy still on the bike but got off on the other side and walked along the old tracks.

Life's journey is always worth taking.

Take time to smell the roses ... and also the tulips ...

And daffodils ... and lilacs ... and sunflowers.

Count blessings like children count stars.

I looked toward the ocean as per usual and I am always pleased with the ever changing view. First bus the Nanakuli bus, not it, then the C bus, not it, finally after about ten minutes the famous #40 bus. Got to Waipahu Transit Center about 6:25. The Waikele bus shows up a few minutes later and took me up the hill to Paiva and Hiapo. From there it is a short pleasant bike ride to Dance Waipahu at August Ahrens School.

At a little after six thirty it was sparsely populated but still early. And I waited to get my first pictures.

By seven they are coming in and it was looking good.

Got a few dances in and and I got some photos of good dancers on the floor.

Dancing? That is what Dance Waipahu is for.

Talked to Maurice about a counter on his Web site, and yes you are right. Most don't know. In the last five or six years I have seen only one counter on any Web site on these islands. All of my blogs have to have counters. If they can't cut it I drop them. And I have dropped at least five. I am not going to beat my gums for nothing. However we cannot read everything in our ordinary pageview counters, we just use it as a guide. 30 is not guarantee better than 25.

More dances and talked to Priscilla about getting an information contributor to the blog. I am sure that many are not that acquainted with the prospect of contributing information and/or photos to share with their fellow dancers. It is taking time and we should all have an understanding. We will have Social Media.

This is just about it for me since I cannot eat in public yet. I brought a container to take some leftovers but I forgot. Left about 8:35 and I timed it, only a five minute bike ride to get to the Waipahu Transit Center. And it is downhill all the way.

The bus arrived packed to the gills, but I was able to get a seat when a gentleman got off at the next stop. Not a bad ride to Nanakuli. At McDonald's, I got me a double cheeseburger and small fries (take out) and was home before ten. Not bad.

Wednesday, in Nanakuli was a better than the average day. My friend Rosie knocked and wanted to know if she could come in and clean up on Thursday. Just fine with me. She does a good job in less than an hour and half. Now twice a month.

Blogger Law #43C: "If everyone doesn't want it, nobody gets it."

Took the bike with me, very necessary on this trip. I arrived at the Waipahu Transit Center before six pm but had to wait for the bus going uphill. The #432 East Waipahu left at six and left me off at August Ahrens School about 6:10. Only a few people there.

They began a nice line dance class but they were just a little too fast for me. I should go more often and concentrate on what they are doing. I can get pretty good at guessing what they are doing. A few more times may do it. It seems to me it could be written down someway. Of course, basic dance moves have to be defined and that will be a long time.

Priscilla, Susan, Manny, Tandy, Joyce and Mel. Now that we are getting to know each other,
first names are just fine. Specially these people, members of a growing dance community.

At seven they started the Night Club Two Step, very nice basic steps. they learn those movements and they can do very well in any night club with the two assistant instructors, Amor and Delia Cabinit.

Later on Erik and Naomi Nakai took over to introduce the next step and end the session. Then they began the Mambo classes. These people can pick some very good dances to teach. Of course there are all those good students too, just getting better all the time.

I left at that time to try to get the #40 bus back to Nanakuli. On the bike it's down hill all the way. Went to Times and get some goodies, like Large Curd cottage cheese, (hard to find) but when I got back to the bus stop the #40 had come and gone. I had to wait until nine and got home almost ten. So how was your day?

Kapolei Chapter HBDA classes

I woke up Monday morning feeling pretty good for I had a good week ahead of me. Got some of my small errands done, and was on time to get the six o'clock bus. I took the bike and walked it merrily along the tracks to the bus stop.

The beach and the ocean was as per usual, a feast for the eyes. Got on the #40 and in no time, it took me to the bus stop, right past the Kapolei Shopping and I rode the bike the rest of the way to Kapolei Elementary. I could feel that I needed that exercise. I got there with the early arrivals and about ten minutes before seven a got a photo of a nice group.

I always like to take a photo of the early birds. They just seem to have more interest.

They had a good crowd early and I had some nice conversation with a few dancers. With the help of Willy I was able to get the first of the three couples I had planned. They got some good people there.

The Samba Class started and I got a photo of the beginning part of it and it was so big I couldn't get all of it in the photo. These classes are the talk of the West side. Mike Agor and Marsha Sorba, current instructors teaching an excellent American Style dancing.

Classes in Kapolei are getting more well known in the West.

Then I waited a while and got a photo of them moving their first steps as partners and to the music. Most were doing just fine. But I seem to get in a hurry I forgot my neck strap to steady and the photo came out too fuzzy.

Then the class ended I was hoping for the other three couples for balance. But every one was a little busy. Willy got me a couple for the "Good People" in February. By that time it was becoming uncomfortable to be holding up the classes. Photos are the beginning soups and ending desserts. Very essential but if difficult to get, there may be another time.

I left hoping I had enough time, but I just took it slow, I needed that exercise and rode the bike all the way to the Transit Center. The C bus arrived less than five minutes later, nice. Only one bike on the two bike rack and I was home in Nanakuli by 8:30.

Dancing in the West

Dancing throughout these islands has reflected our social needs same as anywhere else. These needs were displayed on these islands long before the arrival of the "strangers.". And most primitive dances were performed by members of the same sex with little body contact, (line dancing?)

Ballroom dance referred to partner dances done in a ballroom to traditional ballroom music. The earliest 19th and 20th century forms of dance began with the subsequent interest of partner dancing. It became fashionable in Hawaii, even prior to WWI, for ladies and gentlemen of the high classes to dress well, dance and have polished manners.

Additional partner dances done for pleasure and recreation for all classes were introduced early after the war. Much of it became fads and went into history. There was quite a bit of swing developed just before WWII on all the islands. And with the arrival of large military, there evolved a huge group of people dancing. It was a long time coming as it was essentially touch dancing and included all forms of partner dancing done primarily for recreation or pleasure to a variety of musical styles.

After World War II, traditonal ballroom dancing and music went into a small decline, but partner dancing continued in popularity with rock and roll, and even into the disco era. Social dance took a brief upsurge from the late fifties to the early 70s when they introduce the International style of dance. It then went into a thirty year decline.

The new interest in Ballroom Dance is due to the many movies and the new TV shows that have done such a good job of promotion. But it has been mainly in the spectator division. The real increase has been from the recognition of so many of the existence of the "Social" dancer. This includes the long forgotten club dancer who loves to dance to live music. The amalgamation of the club dancer and the social ballroom dancer is what will be the dominant form in the future.

Fitting In West Oahu

It has been a little tough fitting in with this blog, because it was not planned from the start. But I took advantage of the fact, once I had Platinum Horseshoe running again through Richard's efforts. Most of what I see is still to come this year and it is all in the future.

Moanalua Corridor is lagging because we only have Dance Hawaii at Radford and at Aliamanu, classes and dances and all in the lower Moanalua Corridor. There will be more action in the upper Corridor soon. With a couple of good Information Contributors they can make the 67 average hits per day very easily. Da Spin Doctor at the Pearl City Elks and at the Fleet Lounge is helping too.

Platinum Horseshoe has been in a tizzy and I am no help while I search for a new name. But the coverage will be quite extensive. Wahiawa is the present center with Dot's in Wahiawa and the Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club too. And we anxiously await the new Dance Mililani, with just one information contributor they will bloom into something.

Helemano Plantation is coming to the fore, in having an available place to have a more formal dinner and dance function. There are flickers on the North Shore that could be fanned into flames. Then another sure thing is the new Dance Pavilion at the Patsy Mink Recreation Center. We can look forward to having a couple hundred more dancers in this sector by the end of the year.

Oahu - West blog is left with Kapolei Chapter - HBDA and Dance Hawaii for the present. The discovery of the Golden Coin in Waipahu has be a God Send. An available place for a more formal dinner and dance function. We do not have much at present but there is also something brewing in Ewa and there is some thinking about utilizing the best dance floor in the West at the Waianae District Park. So all this will be unfolding this year. The West is rolling, no doubt about it.

I am a Club Dancer

After having been recently grabbed at while dancing with strange women, I am motivated to record here some concepts I use as a dance club regular. What I write here is the result of dancing for quite a while, longer than the average person does in life.

"You are meant to be whatever you dream of becoming.”

Suffice to say, I started dancing in the 50’s and never stopped. I danced right through the different American dance crazes, including Rock and Roll, Surf dancing, the Monkey, the Jerk, disco touch dancing, the Freak, Rap gestures and now Salsa, Hip Hop and Reggae. There’s of course many other types along the way. There’s also the background of some ballroom dancing familiarity, such as the Cha Cha, Mambo, and Waltz.

Then from the start, there is an influence of performing on the mainland, in a rock band in the 60s. Also I became the band choreographer, creating stage routines for the musicians for performance contests, always aware that enjoyment of the music included a professional visual presentation. I want to record here that at 35 I truly felt like I was the best that I could be as a dancer and as the Disco Doc.

Worried at 40, at 50, waiting for the slip in energy, in muscle strength, and in ligament and tendon elasticity. Sure much of that is now gone at 70. But most amazingly to myself, I feel that at the moment, which I know cannot last forever, I truly feel blessed to be, as a street dancer, “at the top of my game.” What I have lost in sheer power, stretch and speed I more than make up with smoothness, overall body gesture and presence, and advanced integration of combinations due to decades of practice and the fulfillment of dance expression.

Sometimes it is apparent out there on the floor that I may be the last, at least locally, to perform certain moves, a couple generations removed for those now frequenting the clubs. As such I then feel a sense of responsibility to keep the dance styles alive, as long as I can continue to perform it with the required energy and dignity, and not make an old fool of myself. Only then shall I hang up my dancing shoes.

Slow Moving

This blog is moving slowly. Many reasons and very good ones. The facility to get the dance news in Platinum Horseshoe is one and the readers are accustomed to that blog. Then the diversity in which we find more blogs available.

Information overflow can effectively crush all our novice enthusiasm and literally kill even the eagerness of our fans. Anyone starting out must be aware of this obvious but insidious pitfall, I have to minimize wherever. I also minimized the advertising notices for this blog and it will make it mainly on the links and by the tradiional word of mouth.

My efforts have been just get Google and Yahoo both to recognize the existence of the blog and I will take it from there. I try to eliminate the clutter by just working on one marketing system. I don't have to waste a lot of time on Twitter, Facebook etc.

For us it is relatively simple. Get the information that interests our reader/dancers. Next get plenty of people in plenty of photos. From there it should be easy to gradually get people to contribute information for the rest of our blogosphere and from there, our Guest Authors. We are not going to be an overnight success.

Then we do need another Information Contributor now that we have only Kapolei Chapter HBDA and Dance Waiapahu for information pertaining to dancing in our terrritory. There will be something in Ewa and then there is the entire Waianae Coast just waiting for us. The blog has remained in the twenties, average hits per day. I expect to go to Kapolei Chapter and get some photos and make a short update write up. Then I have to find the time to get to August Ahrens for the same for Dance Waipahu. That should bring it into the thirties.

The "cliche" bothers some people, but I consider the phrase just another use of a word. I need to communicate using words without getting too complicated. And if I can use whatever I want to communicate it shouldn't bother these "journalists." Everyone knows what can happen when a person has too large a vocabulary.

"Into each life a little rain must fall." Most everyone understands what that means and that is the success of it. Of course some cliches are opposites, which is true to their use. "Look before your leap" is a word of caution to someone. However, "He who hesitates is lost" is another that conveys quite the opposite, but nevertheless true. So I accept anyone who uses a cliche for whatever his or her reason. I do not intend going for the Pulitzer.

Dance Studio Night Club

A new concept that started in Florida is now creeping up the Atlantic Coast on the Mainland. If it happens in Hawaii it will be in West Oahu.

Studio Inc. NightClub in Tampa, Florida Is a 12,000+ sq. ft. Dance Club with 3 rooms 4 full Bars. Ladies 18 & up, Guys 21 & up. Open 4 Days a week Thursday(reggaeton), Friday(hip-hop), Saturday(latin), Sunday(tropical)

Apparently the action is mostly on weekends. At some places on the Atlantic coast, the night clubs are only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the week is Dance Studio action. Some have even introduced Juice Bars. God forbid! That's blasphemy!

But there has been one for many years in Alhambra, California. The Granada and it is combination, Dance Studio, Restaurant, Night Club and Ballroom. I have heard that they had to hire a young man just to shovel the money into the safe every night.

But in Kapolei, there is no need for such a big place. I would say 4 to 5000 square feet would be mo bettah. With as much machine as possible, pop machine, juice machine, nectar machine, candy manchine and anything else machine, available just to quence the thirst. Sublet the combination Juice and Alcohol bar service and top it off with a small cover.

Latin Dance Friday Night - Cultural Dance on Saturday and Sunday, would be perfect and sold out every week end. Might even have to add an extra night for dancing, either Thursday or Monday. Or even The Pau Hana Dance every Wednesday evening starting at 5:00 PM. Ideas, ideas, some people will just kick them around, but for now, they're just ideas.

Learning To Dance.

Of course Line Dancing has evolved into the best way to start to learn to dance because it is fun from the start and you don't have to lead or follow anyone. At least not in the same sense as partner dancing. Just get your timing and rhythm going first, coupled with a few steps. Now that men know they don't have to wear cowboy boots and a Western hat, they are slowly getting into it for the same reason. It is fun and very enjoyable to move to music on your own in a reasonably accepted manner and in a reasonably short time.

they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it."

You also assimilate the separate rhythms of every dance in our current dance world. You can feel it when you are almost there. Then you can really develop your own style from there and all the time you will have been enjoying movement to music and having a ball, along with the rest of your fellow dancers.

The next stop is dancing in a Night Club environment coupled with elementary ballroom classes that are available throughout this island. Find the dance clubs where you can get some variety of ballroom dancing. Forget about the fancy stuff. Some say it is the best place to get your polish, plus going to their dances and "practice."

In line dancing, you have on the ultra beginners side, just like walking to music, zombie like. But you gotta start somewhere. On the other extreme are those that are shaking their heads, shoulders, hips, legs, feet and toes. Somewhere in between are the real "Cultural" dancers. The ones who are thoroughly enjoying the music and moving to it, "in the correct way," which according the social dancer is the most natural way and no one is ever stuck with anyone at the second rib.

This is a growing crowd, "Da Reel Teeng." However some of you will eventually want to get in the "to be seen" categories. In the Exhibition and Competition dance you get and you give more to the dance world. We wish every success for you and there are an awful lot of good people there too. They do know that they are different and we should not disagree with them.

Moving Right Along

The year is now looking very good. Town Dancer is still running ahead of whatever is in second place by 40 - 50 points.That seems to be pretty well set, so that getting the next Guest Author is crucial. I can phase myself out and let them be an independent blog. They can make or break the rules as they see fit. Likely they can get other Guest Authors and run up the hits to 200 - 300 hits.

Next we have three blogs running neck and neck, up and down. Platinum Horseshoe, Moanalua Corridor and Oahu And Beyond. In a couple months we are going to get some action in one of them and it will move into position to also become independent. These are older blogs and have established some seniority. There have been some changes and there will be name changes too. We will be notified by the reader/dancers the only sure way, with the hits.

Oahu - West and Dance Guide are still relatively new and still under 30 average hits per day. But increases will show in the next few days. One or the other will hit the first threshold of 34 average hits per day which is equivalent to 1000 hits in a 30 day month. That is when they show viability. Kapolei is the anchor for Oahu - West, and Dance Hawaii is getting there too. Waianae beckons and so does Ewa. Hopefully the both of them. This blog has great possibilities but the reader/dancers will be the ultimate judges.

It is very easy to say something in these publications but usually it is better to start small and feel your way through. Requirements of course are very strict. You must be a dancer. Ha! Just email a couple of sentences of something you have been wanting to say to your fellow dancers. Send it to any Guest Author and do not use Anonymous. Use your name to identify the writer but you can even use a pen name if you wish just make it the same one each time.

With time and a little effort you will find a paragraph or two will come out very easily. And it will be fairly easy to email and you are done. Of course, it comes with additional privilegies. You will find that you would like to share a favorite photo of the gang (your group.) You can send in photo and just specify what blog you would like it to be in. We will all come out smelling like a rose. From there it is only a skip and a jump to becoming a Guest Author.

Then pause — to enjoy the flavors, — the colors — the textures — of the Social Dance Scene.

And be nice to the world around you.

Our entire blogsphere is moving along very nicely. We are still gaining reader/dancers slowly but ever so steadily. The blogs are no longer a flash in the pan. This is it and I can see some of our blogs will go much farther when they get independent. If they have no connnection to one person only, that is it. Apparently the downward slump of our dance world, the last twenty years has stopped. This is a welcomed change.

Let us hope this coming change will be better than what it has been. Vow to do some of the things you've always wanted to do for your fellow dancers but couldn't find the time. Call up a forgotten friend and remind him or her about all the fun groups shaping up. Drop an old grudge and replace it with some pleasant memories.

Try very hard not to make a promise that you don't think you can keep. Pay a debt, give a soft answer. Free yourself of envy and malice, share your experience and offer encouragement. Resolve to stop magnifying small problems and shooting from the hip. Remember your mistakes only to learn from them, not to dwell on them.

The reopening up of the Platinum Corridor blog will hold up the hits on this blog. But it will still go, I have Kapolei Chapter HBDA in it and they are very good at getting hits for everyone. Then Dance Hawaii is coming up with some news too. Together with whatever is in store at Ewa or Ewa Beach plus what is coming up in Waianae it will not be so bad. I let the readers decide and the hits should reach 34 average per day by early January. (1000 hits per month.)

Latin Dancing in the West.

As an old and decrepit Latino that I am I can still enjoy a good Cha Cha Cha. I am also very happy to see the new interest in dancing in Waianae, Kapolei and Makakilo. We are going to see some changes in our Dancing in the West.

"There has been only one Christmas - the rest are anniversaries."

Forty some years ago when ballroom dancing began to lose some fans, the English style of dancing gave the studios a badly needed lift. Ten new styles of dances and a vast network of prestigious competition possibilites.

At first the American Style was not abandoned or discredited in any way. Most studios insisted on two full years of American style and the passing of at least the first half Silver American before students considered crossing over to the International (the new name for the English.)

And in doing so they inadvertently placed the International style at a higher level than American style. The early televised competitions featured both styles including some Pro-Am finalists. Up until the late ‘80s, most studios had a place for both styles and used them hand in hand to everyone's great benefit.

Today there is a completely different scenario. Many teachers found they could make a name for themselves via the international competitions without having to rely on the backing from big chain studios. New studios sprouted up that only featured one style. Many dance clubs in Hawaii favor the International. The competitions only televised one style and students want to study that one style they see on TV. Auwe!

"Cuando Escuches Este Valse" por Xavier Solis

Even today many people really believe there is only one valid style and those "other styles" barely mentionable - akin to silly folk dancing ready for extinction. Or are they? In the West, club dancers are leading the change and there is a new class of dancer evolving. Look around, ask around and you will see. The nomenclature for this new dance is still in process awaiting a good definition.

Amid all the competition hype, there is the sound of distant congas drumming louder and louder, the comparsas, the conjuntos, the "Valse" and spirit of the Hispanic people rising up and getting ready to reclaim their beloved national dances. Unfortunately most of it will be coming from Mexico, but it is a start. Before the traditional roaring twenties start there will be some big changes in our dancing on the Island of Oahu.

So I receive more photos and the Kapolei Chapter album gets larger. This seems to be a well kept secret. Don't send any pictures and few will ever see them. Amazing!

Now these are the kind of photos I like to take. Just a few people, so that they come out clear and I usually include their full names. But they are convincing me that the first names are enough. Maybe they are right. Even in my old age memory I am beginning to know the first names.

This club is really establishing the line dance in the West. I hear rumors of line dancing all over now. I will have to find them. Ewa Beach, Mililani, Village Park? But then Kapolei Chapter is leading the charge to the West in our kind of dancing. Lucky they have some very good members, good instructors and a terrific board.

808 Easy Street @ Dots last Saturday

If you grew up with Kalapana, America and love great vocal harmonies backed by a spot on rhythm section 808 Easy Street is for you. The balance was to die for. Vocals harmonies up front and sweet. Best I've heard yet at Dots and that is saying a lot! Word is that they'll be back in February.

A couple sitting with us, Cher/Richard had never heard of Kalapana or 808 Easy Street and were very impressed. Attendance was lighter than usual due to lack of name recognition. They play mostly non dance venues but hope to make inroads to the dance scene. Their material covers, Cha cha, Rumba, Samba, Bachata. Even did an original that was great. A nice change and very danceable.

I chatted with the lead singer Myron Pang and wished the band future success.

Sadly, I was disappointed for the first time at Dots the previous night by one of the "Beat Boys." His mic overpowered everything by 50%. It was distorting and made the overall level too loud for my tastes. When I got out of my car in the parking lot all I could hear was a loud voice along w/faint music.

Inside you couldn't really hear the other singers or harmonies caused by the lack of balance. I ended up wearing ear plugs. Evidently this has been an ongoing ego driven issue (from those in the know.) "He" patently refuses to heed anyone including band members and becomes very defensive when approached about the volume. Too bad, with a little tweaking (sound man) they could have a decent sound. I live to support live music but won't be attending "The Beat Boys" again unless things change.

CRS strikes again. PC definition of CRS, "Can't Remember Stuff."

Been relying on Pat for pics 'cause I haven't been able to locate my 2 year old point and shoot camera. There is a perfectly good explanation for this. I put it some place really safe! I do know where my Sony Digital that I've had for years is but can't find the flash. Figure it's secure w/the other camera.

Got a new camera from Santa which I opened early so will be gettin' my usual lump of coal again next year. Anyway, I was given a quick "How to" and thought, "This is just what I need, simple enough for a 5 year old." Forgoing any serious attempt to practice I ventured out. Imagine my chagrin when I came to the realization of just how intelligent a 5 year old must be.

They as yet can't make cameras idiot proof only idiot resistant. I proved it over the weekend with a plethora of blurry, blotched, attempts. Fortunately I did manage a couple of usable mistakes.

I got a video of 808 ES @ Dots and put it on Youtube.....If you get a chance you gotta hear them.

A Little Update

It is amazing but really quite believable that this blog is already making such progress. This is all coming about with the links to our other blogs. So I live and learn.

Wednesday, December 21st at the Golden Coin in Waipahu. We have great communication with Dance Waipahu and they have a nice group. I can get to make a nice blog, with photos and all, and send the hits going through the ceiling. By next year we can notify Blogger that Platinum Horseshoe can be deleted at their leisure. We will not need it.

"We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work
to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk
through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential."

Then I have to find a nice couple to be the first in this blog's "Good People" for the month of January. Anybody out there? First come, first serve. We have received notice of several that "could be" or maybes, but nothing definite from anyone yet. This action never picked up in Town Dancer or Oahu And Beyond, the potentials thought they were too good for it, but picking up very nicely in the West. As I like to say, the West is leading the way.

It is developing like Platinum Horseshoe but will be having a few changes along the way. The hits should be about better than 34 average per day by year's end. Then we can start working to get them to a respectable 67, (2000 hits per month.) Then I can coast and others may take over the bulk of it. I will have my hands full with the other blogs and get them ready for independence. I expect full independence for all the blogs before I go, and have Oahu - West ready for takeover.

Da Dance at August Ahrens School

Nice day, Friday, got most things done. Ready before six and it was dark already. But it started to lighten up as I got nearer to shore. The bright yellow orange of the sun that had set a half hour ago was still there basking the landscape around me with its glow.

"A blessing becomes a blessing when spoken. So we declare that you are blessed

with a loving family, good health, faith, favor, promotion and provision.

A blessed New Year to you and your family!"

Just never got this kind of beautiful landscape where I use to live. The bus was a little late but it had a bike empty rack and that got me to the Waipahu Transit Center. From there I can take either of three buses. Waipahu West takes me right to the door. Waikele and the E takes me to Paiwa and Hiapo, and from there it is a short ride "downhill" to August Ahrens. I got the Waikele bus this time.

The place was in line dance mode and I got a couple pictures. Not too many people but the change of venue is always to blame. So I don't even know about next time so that fortunately I have been invited elsewhere.

Just came in, and naturally they are line dancing. On the right, the hustle and bustle at the

snack and drink section calls for a little socializing. Nice.

Said my hellos to the people as I walked around. Then had a chance to lottery a dance DVD. It is working out fair and square, no favoritism at all. Turned out to be two winners. Fine.

I have been having trouble getting both names in the pictures, because I want the reader/dancers to know each other. But then Lasting gave me first names on the photo. Now, in thinkng it over, Lasting is right. First names will be good enough, we do know each other pretty well already and it is easier for me too.

So many, I didn't even notice Manny was hidden. That's all right, next time. They did not

seem interested in giving me the names but then everybody knows them.

Danced a few, then came eight o'clock and time fo' Kau Kau.

Then the time is getting close to making my connections and get home. The final photos are always, the members enjoying their repast. No chance to get a quote or two, which I have to find out an easy way to get. Some body out there gonna help?

Sparsly populated, some line dancing but ono-licious grindz as per usual.

Thanks for the latest write up and photos, Pepe! Here are a few more photos. As you know, our social dance was another terrific evening of dancing, great food, and being with our chapter members, our dance instructors and friends. Danny Ramos and Lily Tolentino from Pearl City, Arnold and Millie Chun and Al and Kathy Fukushima from our sister chapter Pearl Ridge, Leona Deponte and Leo and Charito Delgado from Aliamanu, were just a few of our many friends who came over and enjoyed the music of Augusto and Noemi Jarra. The line dance steps Augusto and Noemi showed us were easy to follow. The dance floor, particularly during line dancing, was packed.

Of course, during our social dances we always take the opportunity of thanking and recognizing our dance instructors. They are all volunteers who spend their personal time traveling to the numerous HBDA chapters. In addition to the three different dances they teach each quarter, they also teach us fairly intricate dance routines that we perform during our Anniversary Ball, and a couple of short dance routines that we perform during the Masquerade and Christmas Fundraiser Balls. We are very grateful for their dedication. Eric and Gail Tiwanak, our dance instructors last quarter, made it fun to learn East Coast Swing, Viennese Waltz and Bolero; and they also taught us a short dance routine that we performed at the Masquerade Ball and the Mele Kalikimaka Ball. Thanks again, Eric and Gail!

The New Territory

The sparks are there from Kaena Point, down the entire Waianae Coast to Barber's Point. That is going be a good section when we get rid of some military. They did a great job of leaving the area from Barber's Point to Ewa Beach. I can see the lights in that area in the evening coming over a mile inland. Plenty of new housing there, so that population is bound to coalesce somewhere.

Then there is the "wall" from the South Shore in Ewa Beach going straight up to Haleiwa and the North Shore. That is another section that has sparks all over the place. I have to get all my fans ready to fan the embers into flames. It is coming? You'd better believe it.

The thing is that the old limited area of Platinum Horsehoe has increased quite a bit and we will all be better for it. With the new Dance Pavilion in Waipio and the new Night clubs in Waikele and Waipio, the center will be there. In fact the residents consider themselves living in "Cemtral Oahu." Nice.

The residents of this section are going to be the reader/dancers of this blog and perhaps a few will be willing to contribute a little dance information for their fellow dancers. Could develop this blog into a first class A number one blog. Of course you can check the hits now and not much there.

Then for anyone that might be interested, look into the new Waikiki Social Dance Club, for a different outlook at our dance agendas. Much of it is something most of us social dancers have been thinking about for 30 years. In the past, all of the dance clubs have been influenced first by the American style agendas and then very strongly by the International style agendas. The long standing wants of the club social dancer have been ignored. But the club dancer has always been there and in this century more people are paying attention.

People are still tuning in on Platinum Horseshoe and both Richard and I are writing a little something in it. But I know that the bulk of the news in the West will go in this new blog, We are waiting for Tim's write up on the Kapolei Chapter Social and that will go into Oahu - West. And the hits will move.

Meanwhile we have to do what we can here on this island so that all become aware of Oahu -West and their kuleana. I am going to have to take a trip to Ewa Beach and see what's doin'. Then find someone that has some connection in Haleiwa. (?) I am going to be working on that wall. It is going to be solid. And from there west will be peaches and cream from Barber's Point to Makaha.

The leading group in all this is Kapolei Chapter - HBDA. Good solid organization, terrific board, good teachers and an increasing amount of good people in their membership. You want to join a good club, they are the best example in Oahu -West. And the good kokua we are getting from them isl bringing plenty news into this blog and Tim will run the hits up through the ceiling.

Fortunately we also have Richard Sun as Guest Author and now he is also a backup Administrator. We can't lose, Oahu -West will gain its eventual place in the sun. People are dancing in the West. At the moment we have a total of seven hits. Four from the US, one each from Brazil, Russia and Germany. How you figure?

The Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park was renamed August 2007 for the late civil rights congresswoman Patsy Mink who passed away in 2002. This huge 269 acre park has walking paths, 20 court tennis center, 4 youth baseball diamonds, 4 regulation sized baseball diamonds, A diamond softball complex and the Veteran's Memorial Aquatic Center.

The original proposal for a good "dancefloor" was lost in the shuffle for funds and three years ago there were "no dancers" in the area, that is none, zero, zip, nada. Or at least that is what the many on top surmised. Overall, the Park, so centrally located, West of Waipio across Kam Hwy and just north of Waikele, is a welcomed addition to the sporting world of Hawaii!

We can all hope it stays well-maintained and running for generations to come. And from all we hear, the Dance Pavilion is back on the Agenda, perhaps for all dancers, let us pray..

Gee, I was just getting used to the Platinum Horseshoe now I'm on Oahu West 'cause of issues with the Blog site. Glad it's Pepe that is in charge 'cause I don't have a clue. A late quickie for Dots this weekend. Dots is always fun for listening or dancing 'cause of the great live music offered each week. If you haven't tried Dots maybe it's time......

A lousy beginning.but I have to do something. I even tried to get this new blog with my only true and tried email account and Blogger recorded as my old deleted email. The programmers are just not aware of these things because they are busy working on the new interface which is suppose to blow everyone out of the water. But they cannot correct the everyday mistakes that are piling up by the dozens.

Troubles in Blogger, but then it is free so they certainly don't worry. I made a mistake and no one at Blogger seems to know anything about it. So Platinum Horseshoe blog at the moment has no administrators whatsoever. Richard and I can still post but no one has any direction and no new people can be admitted.

So we cannot even delete it. It just has to stay there until it rots. Meanwhile we have work to do. And perhaps this new blog will cover slightly different territory. Moanlua Corridor is getting pretty well established from Pearl City to Salt Lake. We just haven't been doing much with it lateley. A huge population that is in its developing stages entertainment wise is waiting for us.

There is a solid line, from Ewa Beach up through Waipio, Mililani, Wahiawa and Haleiwa of dancers already there. Anything west of this solid line is Westerly and our kuleana. And the section west of Ewa Beach is becoming more populated along that pristine beach all the way to Barber's Point. The new name could be Oahu West or Westerly, or perhaps another name to firmly identify this entire section.

Classes have come to a close for the Holidays and there are private parties all over the place in the West. Champagne will be flowing all the way up to Makaha. Would be much easier developing if less military and there is plenty room for them on the Big Island.
